Situation
Plot 5 occupies a key position on the estate being the former site of Wallace Forrester's Japanese garden. The north and east facades project their classical West of Scotland facades towards the entrance to the private Avenel roadway. As shown in the above image, the living accommodation is orientated mainly towards the opposite quarters, facing south and west to capture all the light and sun.
This house is perfect for those seeking the space and privacy of Avenel but who prefer the less demanding maintenance requirements of a smaller private garden. It enjoys, however, full access with the five other Avenel homes, to the communally owned and maintained Gryffe Wood and its river walks.
An automatic gate provides the private entrance to the plot from Knockbuckle Lane. The drive runs through the trees which screen the north of the plot, terminating in front of an integral garage. There is a large private area around the house including a substantial terrace, which can be accessed from both wings of the house. This south facing terrace is easily maintained space on which to enjoy balmy summer days. The boundaries of the plot are marked with beech hedging and informal planting.
Accommodation
The inspiration for this house was the original Avenel, designed by Austin Laird in 1928. The design has been updated, providing the charm and warmth of its predecessor but with the convenience and facilities for a modern lifestyle.
